GONZALES - Sheriff's detectives charged a Gonzales man with rape and sexual battery for an assault which authorities said happened this week.

Deputies arrested 56-year-old Carl McKinley after they said he sexually assaulted a woman who was staying with him and his wife.

Ascension Parish Sheriff Jeff Wiley said investigators learned of the assault Tuesday, and said the victim woke up earlier that day and found McKinley assaulting her. Wiley said the victim left the home and walked to a nearby hospital.

Deputies were called to investigate and arrested McKinley late Tuesday night.

McKinley faces charges of third-degree rape and sexual battery, and Wiley said a judge set a $150,000 bond. The sheriff said McKinley has 13 prior arrests on his record, including a 2003 rape.
