Louisiana man gets 60 years for killing girlfriend in front of son
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A Louisiana man pleaded guilty to fatally stabbing his girlfriend 29 times in front of her then 1-year-old son. Damone Ussin, 43, pleaded guilty Monday to manslaughter and obstruction of justice.
Judicial District Judge Stephen Enright Jr. sentenced Ussin to 60 years in prison, 40 years for the manslaughter and 20 years for the obstruction charge. The sentences will run consecutively.
Gretna police said Ussin and 35-year-old Traniel Gray dated “off-and-on,” but in the weeks before Gray was killed, Ussin assaulted her.
Gretna Police Chief Arthur Lawson previously said Ussin left Gray to die on the street early Aug. 9, 2018. The couple regularly walked the neighborhood and surveillance camera video confirmed they did so with Gray’s son about 4 a.m. the morning she was killed.
Lawson said Gray was stabbed 29 times in the face, neck, chest and back. Her son was not injured.
A grand jury previously charged Ussin with second-degree murder, but he agreed to plead guilty to an amended charge of manslaughter.
