LAFAYETTE - A Lafayette police officer is in stable condition following an overnight shooting.

The shooting took place around 11:30 p.m. Thursday at the Willow Apartments.

Police say the officer was searching an apartment for a suspect in another shooting that took place Thursday morning when the suspect and the officer exchanged gunfire.

Although the suspect was wounded, police say he fled to a nearby truck stop on foot. Police say he forced his way into a pickup and forced the driver to take him away from the scene. The suspect led police on a chase into Crowley before he was arrested. The suspect's name has not been released.

Investigators say the officer, whose name has not been released, is a 3 1/2 veteran of the police force.
