BAYOU CORNE - The massive sinkhole in Assumption Parish is still a big safety concern with people worried one of their main highways could be swallowed by it.

The state is working on a solution and will discuss two alternatives at a public meeting Wednesday night.

One offers more protection against the Bayou Corne sinkhole, but comes at a steeper cost: an estimated at $225 million.

The other extends a detour that's already in the works and will cost nearly $50 million.

The Assumption Parish Office of Emergency Preparedness says the alternatives will only be constructed if something happens to LA 70.

Right now, it's being monitored by the LA Department of Transportation.

Residents are pushing for the costly alternative because it offers more protection. They say money shouldn't be a factor when it comes to their safety.

"It's not about the price it is about the safety of the people in this community and in this state," said Arnold Blanchard. "If the road would ever sink they will be sorry they did it the short way."

The public meeting will be from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday at the Assumption Parish Community Center.
