Grand jury canceled, AG to handle case involving chief's son
BATON ROUGE - The Attorney General for the State of Louisiana will handle the progress of a case involving the son of an area police chief.
Iberville Parish Sheriff's deputies believe Kevin Ambeau, Jr., shot two people after a fight in St. Gabriel but was not charged in the shooting. At the time, detectives believed the shooting was in self defense.
Deputies recovered two different sets of shell casings from the scene, and in a previous WBRZ.com post, the sheriff described the scene as a shootout between the two parties.
Monday, at the request of the famly members of the deceased, authorities agreed to cancel a Tuesday grand jury over the matter and turned the case over to the attorney general.
"The more transparency to the investigation is better for the case," Sheriff Brett Stassi said.
Despite not being charged directly with the deadly shooting, Ambeau was arrested an unrelated charge when investigators discovered a stolen firearm inside his residence.
Ambeau is the son of the St. Gabriel Police Chief, also named Kevin Ambeau.
