EDGARD - A football team playing in honor of its murdered coach was victorious Friday night.

Juan Joseph, 27, was killed at a Baton Rouge nightclub on Bennington Ave. last weekend. He was the quarterbacks coach for the West St. John Rams.

"It hurts it really hurts to lose someone like that," head coach Robert Valdez said.

Players proudly wore the initials "JJ" on the back of their helmets during the game that ended in a 51-0 defeat over Varnado.  The Rams played at home.

"It made me feel a little guilty a little bit because I kind of feel like my mind should be somewhere else. I'm glad, just glad to be out here. We just need to play football. We need to play," Valdez said.

Joseph's father, Buck, led the team on the field ahead of the start of the game while his mother, his wife and four-year-old daughter sat along the track surrounding the field.

"He was that guy that you would want your kid to be like," friend Gerald Gaudia said. "I know, for me, I want my son to be like {Juan] because he was always there for anyone."

Baton Rouge Police arrested Kendric Cloud for Juan Joseph's murder. Lemark Cloud was later charged as the getaway driver.
