Fire hydrant left open for weeks during work
GONZALES - One man says a fire hydrant in Gonzales has been wasting thousands of gallons of water over the past two weeks.
On his bread delivery route, Jeff Pederson passes by the fire hydrant daily. One day he discovered it pouring gallons of water by the minute. He's tried to get the city of Gonzales to cut it off with no success.
"Well it's kept running and running and running every day. I just want it turned off. You know there's no sense of running it all this time," said Pederson. "You know California, they just went water rationing. You know we've been lucky here. That's 200,000 gallons that I bet California would love to have."
The Gonzales Fire Department is in the middle of replacing more than two dozen fire hydrants in the city, according to Fire Chief Tracey Normand. Normand says the department left the hydrant open to flush the system while work is being done on hydrants in the area.
"What happens when you do repairs to a water system you stir up sediment, you get brown water and things of that nature. So they'll turn the hydrant on and let it flow for a while til the system clears up," he said. "The water works department, they take a sample and send it off to the state to make sure that everything is OK."
Despite the hydrant dumping water out for the past two weeks the city doesn't feel it's a waste.
"Absolutely not. I live in the city. I want good quality drinking water," said Normand. "I'm the fire chief here actually, so I like to know that my fire hydrants are in service and that we can provide suppression efforts for our citizens."
The city did shut off the fire hydrant Thursday after News 2 spoke with City Hall.
