BATON ROUGE - An inmate escaped custody briefly Wednesday near the state courthouse downtown.

According to the sheriff's office, Clayton Holland was being taken to the 19th Judicial District Courthouse when he got away from Pine Prairie corrections officers. He was at the courthouse for a hearing on forgery, theft, and shoplifting charges out of East Baton Rouge Parish.

The sheriff's office said a deputy working a community assignment at Coffee With A Cop rushed to the area and captured Holland near the USS Kidd.

Sheriff's deputies said they're still investigating the circumstances that led to Holland's escape.
