BATON ROUGE - Residents are stocking up on storm-related items at the local grocery and hardware stores.

Sue Conran says she and her husband aren't taking any chances purchasing lanterns just in case the power goes out.

"Well we're getting batteries, we got water already and we got some new lanterns since we're down one from last year," Conran said.

Generators, flashlights and batteries are big selling items at hardware stores like Home Depot. Lexie Penigar is a sales associate at the Home Depot on Coursey Boulevard, and she said they have stocked up on items in anticipation of the severe weather.

"We're getting plywood in we have it in stock right now but we're also getting it in as the truck come. That's a big necessity right now to cover any big open windows that might cause a problem if the winds get to high. And also chain saws that's going to be another big need," Penigar said.

Even the local grocery stores are preparing for the weather.

"Plenty of water is what they're buying a lot of bread. We're seeing some sales on our Gatorade and Powerade drinks, a lot of batteries, a lot of sandwiches finger foods,"  Assistant Store Director Claude Reed said.
