Deputy fired after domestic dispute arrest
PIERRE PART - Sheriff Mike Waguespack fired an Assumption Parish Sheriff's deputy Tuesday before the deputy was arrested on domestic abuse charges for an incident this past weekend.
Deputies charged Gary Ellis Jr., a four-year veteran of the sheriff's office and a patrol deputy, with domestic abuse battery, battery of a police officer, and attempted disarming of a peace officer Tuesday.
Investigators said early Sunday morning they investigated a domestic dispute reported at Ellis' Pierre Part home. Deputies said Ellis had been drinking all night at a party and got into an argument with his wife when he got home. Deputies said they were told Ellis threw his wife to the ground multiple times before they arrived.
Investigators also said Ellis confronted the first deputy on the scene, who had tried to calm him down. Deputies said Ellis grabbed her and tried to grab her duty weapon before other deputies arriving at the scene could step in and stop him.
The sheriff said Ellis was booked into the parish jail Tuesday and has not had a bond set yet.
