Deputy arrested, accused of smuggling phones into jail
GONZALES - A sheriff's deputy was fired then arrested on charges he smuggled cell phones into the jail where he worked.
The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office released information about the arrest late Thursday evening. The deputy, Kevin Wald, was arrested earlier in the day after being terminated. Wald was booked into the jail where he usually worked on three counts of malfeasance in office and three counts of introduction of contraband into a jail.
The sheriff said other deputies were tipped off that Wald was bringing cell phones into the jail where he worked as a corrections supervisor.
“The Ascension Parish Sheriff’s Office understands the community we serve deserves transparency and accountability," Sheriff Jeff Wiley said. “While further details are not readily available due to the case still being under investigation, I believe strongly that the community deserves to know when a member of this agency has been charged with a crime."
