WALKER - One Livingston Parish road has some improvements after five people died there within a month.

The curve is south of I-12 on Walker Road South outside of Walker. On New Year's Eve, three people died there after a head-on crash. Resident Stephen Price says he's seen the aftermath of many crashes on that stretch of road.

"We had just passed that same spot within an hour before that happened. That could have been my family," said Price. "That could have been my friend's family, anybody that was traveling that road that night. It could have been them."

After an outcry from the community, the Department of Transportation and Development installed chevron warning signs Wednesday. The signs were posted along the curves of the highway from I-12 to May Road. DOTD also plans to add raised pavement markers within the next month. However, residents want more done to warn drivers.

"The signs will help some, but I think the best thing to do is put some grooves across the road and when you hit the grooves it will get their attention," said business owner Harris Lefort. "You can put two or three sets of grooves, and it would get their attention before you get to that first curve."

"Seeing those signs go up it certainly has to help some. I still think we can do more," said Price. "I think a flashing light just south of here just warning them of the reduced speed limit bringing them down to 45. That would help."

DOTD will make more improvements to Walker Road South if an ongoing study recommends more action, but DOTD does not plan to make any changes to the speed limit.
