BATON ROUGE - Police said a suspected gunman is behind bars after he allegedly bit an officer who responded to a report of a shooting on Monday night.

The shooting happened just before midnight in the 3100 block of Dalton Street. Police said they arrived on the scene to find the suspect, John Belliazere, with the victim in a chokehold.

According to investigators, Belliazere was handcuffed, but continued to resist and eventually bit one of the officers as they attempted to restrain him.

After he was safely secured, Belliazere was taken to an area hospital due to his erratic behavior.

The victim was taken to the same hospital to be treated for a gunshot wound to the right arm.
