NEW ORLEANS - Saints head coach Sean Payton told the media Friday that quarterback Drew Brees would not play this Sunday in South Carolina.

Luke McCown will start in his place, according to WWL-TV.

Brees bruised his rotator cuff in the Saints' loss to the Tampa Buccaneers this past weekend. Payton said earlier this week things had looked promising for the quarterback, who had not thrown in practice.

Payton said Brees had been focused on preparing to start and following the game plan, which would not change too much for McCown.

 The Saints badly need a win after their 0-2 start for the season. They face the Panthers at 1 p.m. ET Sunday.
