BATON ROUGE- It's summertime and kids are out of school. This summer BREC is offering a little something for everyone to enjoy during their time off. Kids at the Farr Park Equestrian Center are spending their summer finding out if they have what it takes to ride a horse.

This morning News 2's Rebecca Buchanan visited the park to learn more about what the equestrian camp is all about.

At the Junior Horsemanship Camp kids will learn how to lunge, muck a stall, and even feed and medicate horses. It's the perfect summer activity for any aspiring equestrian.

The camp aims to educate young horse-lovers about the care and maintenance of horses, and improve on their riding skills. Young riders can choose to ride western or English. Campers will even be allowed to take the horse on a trail ride, after they've mastered the riding basics.

Counselors and volunteers at the camp work hard to make sure campers develop their riding skills, no matter what level they start at.

"It gives them so much confidence," said camp volunteer, Samantha Siegel, about the feeling campers get from the training experience.

Autumn Smith says she enjoys going to the camp because she learns how to work together with the horses.

"It's a team effort with horses," said Smith. "We work together a lot."

The jam-packed week comes to an end with campers competing against one another in a final horse show. The friendly competition gives children a chance to show-off all the skills they've learned from the camp.

Campers can still sign up for the following sessions:

June 29-July 3: Junior Horsemanship Camp (Jr. Master Horseman)

July 6-10: (Pony, Western and English)

July 13-17: (Pony, Western and English)

July 20-24: (Pony, Western and English)

July 27-31: Junior Horsemanship Camp (Jr. Master Horseman)

For more information about the camp visit the Farr Park website.
