The Courier reports each cutter is named for an enlisted Coast Guard hero who distinguished him or herself in the line of duty. Griesser was keeper of the Buffalo, New York, Life-Saving Station and earned the Gold Lifesaving Medal on Feb. 23, 1901, for a dramatic water rescue of a man on Nov. 21, 1900.
