BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — The Louisiana Capitol’s doors were briefly locked to the public Wednesday and some elevators turned to restricted access as dozens of President Donald Trump’s supporters gathered on the steps to oppose congressional recognition of President-elect Joe Biden’s victory.

The protesters, who at one point numbered about 200 people, remained peaceful in Baton Rouge, unlike the scenes pouring out of Washington, D.C.

But amid concern about the images coming out of the nation’s capital, Louisiana’s statehouse was temporarily limited to people who had a badge to get inside the locked doors. Reporters needed an escort to reach Gov. John Bel Edwards’ office for his weekly coronavirus briefing.

The local Trump supporters — many of whom did not wear masks — held flags backing the Republican outgoing president, American flags and at least one sign that said “Stop the Steal.” A few gave speeches.
