BATON ROUGE - Authorities said Friday that investigators at Southern University have charged or arrested a dozen people in connection with a viral video which appeared to show a large brawl and gunfire on the Baton Rouge university's campus.

Spokesperson Ed Pratt said SUPD have identified 11 students and one non-student in the video since it surfaced on April 2. The video made the rounds on social media and showed a group of people fighting, before someone fired what appeared to be a gun.

Some thought the video was staged as an April Fool's prank at first. Pratt said the consequences were very real, though: the students were given misdemeanor summons to appear in court for disturbing the peace, and the non-student was charged with trespassing and arrested.

"Southern University does not allow this type of behavior to go on, from our students or their guests," Pratt told News 2.

According to Pratt, the person seen firing a gun in the video has not been identified. Because of the poor quality of the video, Pratt said SUPD sent the video off to the FBI for further analysis.

The students given summonses will also face a disciplinary hearing at the university to see if any further penalties or fines will be issued. Pratt said some of those hearings have already taken place.
