BATON ROUGE - Transportation officials said they have one million pounds of salt ready to go in case highways around the Baton Rouge area start to ice over Thursday night.

The Department of Transportation and Development loaded trucks with sand Thursday and performed full maintenance checks on the equipment which covers the 11-parish area around Baton Rouge.

DOTD said starting at midnight trucks will scout highways around their coverage area to check for precipitation or ice. If any starts to show up, they'll start deploying salt and sand to keep the roads passable.

Friday morning is forecast to begin below freezing and some precipitation is anticipated to move into the area from south Texas. If it arrives soon enough forecasters say it could turn into sleet or freezing rain, and has the strongest chance of impacting northwest East Baton Rouge Parish.

News 2's Troy Gaulden will have more details about wintry weather preps around the parish tonight starting at 4 p.m.
