Yard signs fight speeding drivers

BATON ROUGE - Yard signs around Captial Heights ask drivers to slow down and enjoy the neighborhood; the Capital Heights Neighborhood Association hopes people will get the message.

Capital Heights Neighborhood Association President Tyler Hicks says he knows people that are fed up with speeders.

"We heard a lot of frustration from our neighbors that they really couldn't do anything," he said. What are they supposed to do, go out there and yell at every car that goes by?"

Neighborhood activists hope the signs are a better, calmer option and read "slow down and enjoy our neighborhood."

"We want everyone to just get the flavor of the neighborhood," said Capital Heights resident Terry Singer.

The flavor of the Captial Heights neighborhood is a warm, inviting and pedestrian-friendly space where many people walk, run and ride bikes daily. The signs follow another plan that received city approval to reduce the speed limit from 30 mph to 25 mph.  Still, though, there are complaints that drivers cutting through the area drive too fast.

Hicks says these measures to slow down the traffic should help over time with changes coming to Government Street and Claycut Road. Although delayed, the changes are expected to create more cut-through traffic, at least while construction is happening.

Hicks says the delay in construction could help the neighborhood prepare.

"[We want to] make sure our residential, quiet neighborhood stays that way and keeps its character," he said.

The signs cost $10 and can be purchased through the Capital Heights Neighborhood Association.
