'Worst road' in Livingston Parish getting fixed

DENHAM SPRINGS - Work has started to fix the so-called worst road in Livingston Parish.

Once compared to an Iraqi bomb-riddled street, Southpoint Drive in Denham Springs is one of 40 roads on the Livingston Parish overlay project list.

"It's like you're in an army tank. I mean it was bumpy," said resident Hollis Barnett. "You couldn't drink coffee coming down here, that's for sure, it was rough."

Residents along Southpoint Drive say the dilapidated road causes their homes to decrease in value, and the rough ride hurts their vehicles.

"Well they had a lot of potholes here. It was just real difficult to drive, you know, and it was just real rough on the vehicles you know," said John Diez.

Now the old road has been torn out by contractors who will replace it with new asphalt. Contractors have also made drainage upgrades in the subdivision a few weeks ago, according to Department of Public Works Director Sam Digirolamo.

"We're going to be able to have a good easy drive in and out of our homes, and it makes the values of our homes go up. It's just going to be great," said Diez.

Contractors have a few months left to complete work on all 40 roads.
