Woman accused of hiring hit man takes the stand

PORT ALLEN - A wife accused of hiring a hit man to kill her husband told a courtroom full of people, she and her husband had a rocky marriage but she never wanted him murdered.

Monique Kitts and Karl Howard are on trial for the death of Corey Kitts. Kitts, the wife, is accused of paying Howard to kill her husband four years go.

Thursday, Monique Kitts took the stand. She admitted to having an affair and said her marriage was like being at a job she hated. But, she said she and her husband were trying to work through their difficulties.

Kitts had to reshape her image after being painted as a money-hungry, cheating wife who wanted her husband dead for his hefty life insurance policy. Prosecutors spent the better part of almost two weeks painting her as a woman who would stop at nothing to hire a hit on her husband.

As prosecutors wrapped their case Wednesday, they used a forensic accountant to testify about cash withdrawals Monique Kitts made in the months before her husband was killed. Prosecutors claimed those withdrawals - about $105,000 - were used to pay Howard, while defense attorneys argued that the cash couldn't directly be linked to Kitts and Howard.

Before the trial recessed Thursday, Monique Kitts also admitted she called and texted Howard on the day of the murder, gave him gifts and called him a good friend.
