Widening proposed for Perkins Road

BATON ROUGE - A congested stretch of road in Baton Rouge could get a much-needed upgrade.

One section of Perkins Road from Siegen Lane is currently two lanes. Neighbors say that causes congestion and a traffic nightmare.

There's a plan in the works to widen Perkins Road from Siegen Ln. to Pecue Ln. to four lanes, but it's a plan that won't happen overnight.

The widening is a plan under East Baton Rouge Parish's road improvement program called the Greenlight Plan Project. Wednesday night, the city-parish hosted a meeting to discus the plan with residents.

People in the area say they're pleased with the effort.

"It makes me feel good. Makes me feel like my taxes are going somewhere viable. Louisiana is known historically for bad roads," said Pete Petrawski.

DPW says it will cost about $26 million to widen the 1.5 mile stretch of road.

The city is hoping it can get federal dollars to pay for the work. If not, the project could take longer to complete.
