Where's my Louisiana income tax refund?

BATON ROUGE - If you haven't received your Louisiana state tax refund, you're not alone.

"I got my federal return pretty quickly," resident Elizabeth Crain said. "I've been wondering where my state return is."

Crain isn't the only one wondering where her refund is. According to the state Department of Revenue, a halt in issuing refunds happened because the state's tax system needed a software update.

"The two-week delay was to simply give us time to implement a brand-new identity theft tax fraud prevention system," said Department of Revenue spokesman Byron Henderson.

With more people filing electronically, the agency has discovered more tax fraud cases: nearly 23,000 were discovered in the state last year alone.

If a questionable return is filed, the taxpayer must complete a data test or survey to prove it's their return.

"We began processing returns on Feb. 15 and we began issuing refunds yesterday, on Feb.16," Henderson said. "As of this morning, we've already gotten 24,000 of them out. So they're moving at a pretty rapid pace right now."
