What the duck?
WEST MONROE- It's just 54 words that have struck a chord for some and a nerve for others. Just three lines from an interview Duck Dynasty star Phil Robertson did with GQ Magazine cost him his job- at least, for now.
Robertson was put on indefinite suspension Wednesday night after his comments were released where he compares gays to bestiality and calls them sinners.
"But hey, sin: It's not logical, my man. It's just not logical," Robertson told the magazine. WBRZ.com has withheld some of the more opinionated thoughts because some might find them offensive. For instance, Robertson talks in detail about sex with a woman compared to what he assumes sex is like with a man. Clicking here takes you to the full interview.
A&E told industry publications Robertson's opinions are his alone, and decided it was best to have him exempt from future episodes. Ironically, there was a marathon of shows on the network as the whole ordeal was unfolding.
"If they're afraid they would lose audience because of that then it's their right," Duck Dynasty fan Mark Courter said.
"I don't necessarily think personally they should of, but it is their right."
Support for Robertson was also posted on social media accounts, where WBRZ Facebook followers posted things like: "God made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve."
But, activists want the events of Wednesday evening to be a "teaching moment."
"I hope he uses this time," John Denison of the Forum for Equality Foundation said. Denison, who is gay, lives in neighboring Monroe and invited the cast of the show to dinner.
"I would love to reach out to him, across the Ouachita River, and invite him to dinner with my friends and family. And I can eat with his friends and family so that we can create a dialogue about treating everybody in Louisiana with respect and dignity."
