WBR voters decide two education proposals Saturday

BATON ROUGE – The future of schools in West Baton Rouge Parish is in the hands of voters.
Two new tax proposals to improve the quality of eduction and facilities will be on the ballot. The school system says they will need the proposals to pass as the average age of the buildings are 55-years-old.
The school system said that it will use the first proposal to build multipurpose buildings, replace temporary buildings and build a brand a new Brusly High School along with a new K-8th in Erwinville.
The second proposal, a 10-year, 12-mill renewable property tax, would give teachers a raise with better benefits that translates to a $5,000 pay raise for teachers.
West Baton Rouge School Superintendent, Wes Watts, said that he believes that if the proposition passes, they can recruit and maintain quality teachers.
"We're losing a few of our best teachers each year, because they can go somewhere else and make some more money, but you can't blame them for that," Watts said.
However, he said that if the voters do not approve the proposals, he will work hard but will not be able to move forward much.
"If we don't, then we are going to work as hard as we can to help our students to achieve at the highest level, but this is something that will propel us to that next level," Watts said.
