Walker High set for field turf and track upgrades

WALKER - Excitement at Walker High School in Livingston Parish is growing as plans for a new turf field and brand new outdoor track are finalized.

"I mean they're going to come out here and see it, and I mean it's an eye catcher," said Walker Football Head Coach Brandon Lawley.

The old, worn out grass field will get a much needed upgrade for next school year. The nearly $2 million upgrade will also bring Walker High up-to-date with other schools in the parish.

"You go to Live Oak and you see what they have, you go to Denham and see what they have and you come out here and up until now really there is no comparison," said Lawley. "Now our kids are going to feel like they have the best, that they have the same thing that our competition has."

"Walker High is a good school, and people are moving into the area for all of our schools," said Walker Principal Jason St. Pierre. "This is just another benefit that people can say we have a nice facility that people want to send their kids to."

Along with keeping up with the times, the turf field offers benefits to the school's groundskeepers.

"It's a lot easier to upkeep the field when it's turf rather than grass cause you don't have to worry about weather and things like that and painting and cutting the field," said St. Pierre.

Walker High plans to use a coconut fiber infill instead of the typical rubber pellets found in artificial turf. Coaches say this will keep the turf's temperature cooler. Construction on the track and field should begin in April or May.
