Walker Animal Shelter getting huge makeover

WALKER - The city of Walker in Livingston Parish is spending $150,000 to improve its animal shelter.

With a passion for animals, Walker leaders have already purchased a new animal control truck, improved ventilation and built a new treatment room. Walker Mayor Rick Ramsey says the city plans to build a new quarantine area for dogs including new flooring throughout the shelter. They'll also double the shelter's capacity after installing new kennels.

Walker Councilwoman Scarlett Major spends a lot of time volunteering at the Walker Animal Shelter and says the improvements will make life easier for the animals.

"It makes me very proud that we have a mayor and a council that will put the money in towards the animal shelter to make it more comfortable for the animals and make it a more pleasant experience for people to come and adopt," she said.
Ramsey says the improvements will help to find a permanent home for the animals.

"More than anything else I think that the new improvements we make with the new caging, the new flooring, the new ventilation is going to increase the public's perception of the condition of the animals when they walk in and increase our adoption rate," he said.

Ramsey believes the improvements will be finished by the end of the year.
