Walker aiming to de-annex section of I-12

WALKER - Leaders in the city of Walker want to de-annex a section of Interstate 12 to help out the city's police force.

Mayor Rick Ramsey says Walker annexed the interstate toward the Satsuma community 15 years ago. He now says it's time to get rid of the headaches that go along with that portion of I-12.

"If you have a major accident on the interstate between Walker and Satsuma we have several units that have to respond and work it until the accident is cleared, so it does tax our available resources," he said.

The city may vote to cut out 2.5 miles of I-12 at its council meeting Monday. If approved, Walker would de-annex the interstate from Middle Colyell Creek to the Satsuma interchange.

"We continue to expand our city limits by bringing in more residential and commercial areas in our center core. It'll free up our police department to do more in our area," said Ramsey.

After the possible de-annexation, Walker would still have nearly 3 miles of interstate in its city limits. Ramsey says the portion that is de-annexed would go back to the state. However, the town of Livingston may be interested in annexing it into its town.
