VIDEO EXCLUSIVE: Trailer breaks free on interstate "bump"

GROSS TETE - Drivers believe a jolt from a bump caused a runaway trailer on I-10 East near the Gross Tete Wednesday.

Denham Springs resident Mike Dutcher caught the incredible video with his dash cam recorder.

"We were both cruising along about 70 miles-per-hour and I slowed down because I knew the bump was coming that's why I was about to get that in the video. So I slowed down or I would have been right next to it," Dutcher said.

The bump's been on the road for years, according to drivers.

"It'll knock the steering wheel out of your hand," veteran truck driver James Hurst said. He believes the bump has hassled drivers for at least six years.

No one was ticketed for the loose trailer incident.

The Department of Transportation doesn't agree that the trailer got away because of the roadway. But, the agency admitted the stretch of interstate is not up to standard.

DOTD plans to resurface 6.3 miles of I-10 from Ramah to the West Baton Rouge line, which includes the bump.

The project is estimated to cost between $2.5 million and $5 million. It will get bids this December.

But, Dutcher wants something done much sooner.

"I'm telling you. People need to hang on to their wheel in Louisiana until they do something," he said. "And a lot sooner than one year."
