Victims' families mourn one year since drunk driver killed seven people

BATON ROUGE - Dozens gathered at the steps of the State Capitol to remember seven people who died one year ago Thursday. They lit candles, said prayers and asked for tougher laws dealing with drunk drivers.

"It's my mom... There's not one day that I don't wake up thinking about her," said Marcus Gaines. "It's my sister. You're thinking about one of them and before you know it you're thinking about another one."

The seven victims were driving back from church in East Feliciana Parish, when Brett Gerald crashed into them, killing all seven. Recently, Gerald's sentence was reduced from 70 to 35 years.

"How do you explain that to her children?  I don't understand," Kendra Mathews asked.

The family hopes that strengthening laws will save another family from the pain they live every day.
