Veterans now fighting to find jobs

BATON ROUGE- Thousands of veterans are celebrating Veterans Day without the one thing they want the most: a job.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the unemployment rate for veterans stands at 8.3 percent in the U.S. That's close to 700,000 vets are unemployed. It's even harder for female veterans to find work: currently, 15.5 percent of female vets are without work.

Weterans say there's a struggle to find employment because it's a hard for them to change back into civilian life after years of service. They say it's especially harder when going up against higher-than-normal unemployment rates.

Robert Davis is a Vietnam War veteran who's been without work since May.

"It's a lot of jobs that are not there for us, and the few things they do have I'm not experienced for, it's really hard," said Davis.

James Rodney and some other local vets are working on a new training and education program for unemployed veterans to upgrade their skills and get them back to work.

"I don't see a place where they're prepared for these people for when they come home. Look at some of the problems they bring with them how we going to deal with those problems and keep them off the streets," said Rodney.
