GONZALES- Hundreds showed up at Ascension's Veteran's Memorial Park today to honor the men and women who fight for America's freedom.

It was the largest annual gathering at the park, which featured more than 150 school choir members and service men and women from every branch.

"I appreciate anyone who comes up and thanks me for what I've done in this country, in this world," said Peter Bourgeois, a 94-year old veteran who served in World War II. "I love this country and I fought for it, but I'm at the stage now I don't think I'll be up much longer, I've been over the hills a dozen times so far."

"It means a lot to me and really the ones that shake your hand, you know, that you have served for, it's an uplifting thing with everyone sitting around, you know you served for a good duty," said Jeff Thompson, a veteran who fought in the Korean War.

After the ceremony the veterans were treated to a Jambalaya dinner.
