BATON ROUGE - Utility bills after a cold snap in Louisiana are up about 20 percent from this time last year.

Entergy said their customer energy usage is up 14 percent for December and 17 percent for January, which is about $20 more for a 1,000 kWht user. DEMCO also said their overall energy usage is up 24 percent for the last billing cycle.

Most customers News 2 talked to said they'll pay more to keep their families warm.

"No matter what the temperature is I'm going to be warm, if it's hot outside I'm gunna be cool and energy is something that is not a luxury, it's a requirement, it's something that we all have to have," said Mada McDonald.

Both DEMCO and Entergy have average bill pay option to help their customers spread the cost from months that are more expensive than others over the course of a full year.
