USS Kidd honors vets in Kamikaze attack

BATON ROUGE - It was a day of remembrance for the American heroes that made the ultimate sacrifice when the USS Kidd was the site of a Kamikaze attack.

It was the 70th anniversary remembering the attack made by a Japanese aircraft that plowed into the ship on April 11, 1945. The attack killed 38 men and wounded another 55.

Three of the survivors were in the Capital City with their families and were honored for their bravery at the ceremony.

"I thank God every day I still got my mind, I can still drive my car, I can still fly on airplanes and I don't know whether that'll last one day or two years, but I thank God everyday that I am still here," said Bill Barnhouse.

The USS Kidd representatives said it was a chance to experience history.

"This is a great opportunity for young and old to meet the people who made the history that we read about," said Ship Superintendent Tim Nessmith.
