Urine found in elderly woman's cup; Sheriff's office investigating

ASSUMPTION PARISH - A family is fuming after finding a cup of urine on their loved one's nightstand at Heritage Manor Nursing Home.

The sheriff's office is investigating the complaint and has taken several DNA samples from workers.

"That's the point where we're at," said Assumption Parish Sheriff Leeland Falcon.

Edna Alleman, 97, has resided at Heritage for three years. July 6, 2017 her daughter, Diane Richard, was visiting when she says she came across the strong odor.

"It was nauseating," Diane Richard said.

The sheriff's office is currently investigating several leads.

"I'm not going to get in details of the case, again you're given a version of events, and then what you have to do is try to piece together the evidence to support that version or to show some discrepancies in that version," Falcon said.

Meanwhile, the family wants answers. They say they're disgusted with the discovery and want to know if their loved one is safe.

"We are going to find out who's urine it is," Richard said. "Definitely."

Heritage Manor Nursing Home released the following statement Tuesday:

It is Assumption Healthcare and Rehabilitation’s understanding that no one employed by or contracted with the facility was involved in this incident. We are aware of the ongoing sheriff’s investigation and are cooperating fully. Assumption Healthcare and Rehabilitation will vigorously defend the high quality of care we provide our residents every day.
From the moment we became aware of this situation, we have cooperated fully with the Assumption Parish Sheriff’s Office and the Louisiana Department of Health. In fact, the Louisiana Department of Health conducted an on-site review and inspection related to this report and notified Assumption Healthcare that no deficient practice was found.
The safety and well-being of each resident at Assumption Healthcare is our top priority always. We will continue to cooperate with all officials to resolve this issue quickly and decisively.
