Unclear if EBRSO will move into proposed law enforcement complex

BATON ROUGE - Less than a week after the city-parish announced plans to buy the old Woman's Hospital Campus on Airline Highway and turn it into a law enforcement headquarters and training complex, it's unclear if the Sheriff's Office is on board.

Mayor Kip Holden envisions the Woman's Hospital acquisition to become the headquarters for the Baton Rouge Police Department and the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office.

Holden said the Sheriff's Office has been invited to the table for discussion about the move and direction of the law enforcement complex.

"The facility itself is big enough to accommodate the Sheriff's Department as well as the city police. As to whether or not [Sid] takes part in the whole process, that's strictly left up to him. Our thing right now is getting those officers in an environment that's more conducive to the work that they do," Holden said.

Currently, Baton Rouge Police operates out of an old and dilapidated school on Mayflower Street downtown.

It's a building the police department temporarily moved into in 1989 and never relocated.

In March, the Metro Council approved a deal to lease a 20,000 square foot building at the airport which would become the new headquarters for the Sheriff's Office.

Taxpayers would pay $161,000 a year for the next five years to rent the building from the airport commission.

At that time, the Sheriff's Office anticipated moving into the facility by September, but as of now renovations continue. EBRSO now plans to move in after the start of 2013.

Last week, the city-parish entered into an agreement to buy the Old Woman's Hospital for $10 million and spend another $10 million retrofitting the facility for law enforcement use.

The East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff's Office said it doesn't have enough information to comment on the old Woman's Hospital Campus or if it plans to move there.
