ORANGE BEACH, Alabama - A young man and a boy from Baton Rouge drowned Friday night along a stretch of gulf beach popular with Louisianans.

The bodies of 19-year-old Steward Spencer III and 12-year-old Joshua Spencer were found overnight, media outlets in the Mobile area reported. The two, who are brothers, were with their family on an extended weekend trip to the coast.

The brothers' grandfather, Steward Spencer I, told the Advocate that the older brother tried to save the younger one in the rip current, but both were swept out.

They were swimming about 20 yards from the beach.

The East Baton Rouge Parish School System released a statement regarding the deaths Saturday afternoon.

"East Baton Rouge Parish School System officials were saddened to learn of the recent loss of Scotlandville Middle Student-Athlete Joshua Spencer. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends as they grieve during this tragedy," the statement read.

The school district says it will provide support for faculty and students starting Monday.
