Twerk hoax on La. town

DEQUINCY- Fans of Miley Cyrus can continue their dance routine, now known as "twerking." It is not illegal in this southwest Louisiana town, despite what the Internet reported Tuesday.

A website posted a satirical report that the mayor banned the dance move because of its defiant acts against moral and religious thought. The story was false, and the town leaders told WBRZ News 2, they've been paying for the joke all day.

The phones have been ringing off the hook, a town clerk said. She said people have been calling, upset about the "law" and wondering why on earth the town of a few thousand would even care.

"It's just not true," she said. The mayor spent the afternoon interviewing with reporters who showed up to cover the story when it "broke."

"There's a lot more important things we have to worry about," the mayor said.

"Like the Christmas train that's coming in to town soon," he said. Mayor Lawrence Henagan said the publicity is distracting from the good things happening in his town.

Henagan said he is working with the district attorney to see if there is anything that can be done about the reporting, which has used Dequincy as the setting of other bizarre stories, such as kids getting guns at school.

As for the dance itself, the mayor said he doesn't know much about it.

"I saw it on TV when it was on the news after the awards show," he said.

Henagan listens to music from the 1970s and does not listen to Miley Cyrus.
