Toolkit from Pennington Biomedical tackles childhood obesity

Related Story

BATON ROUGE - The Pennington Biomedical Research Center recently launched a new program aimed at reducing childhood obesity in kids in our area.

The new "Childhood Obesity Treatment Toolkit" made its debut last week. It features information for pediatricians to evaluate obesity in children, as well as approaches for treatment. It also stresses the importance of family involvement, healthy eating and an active lifestyle.

"We realized that obesity has become a major problem in our state," explains PBRC Assistant Professor Dr. Amanda Staiano. "One in two children are either overweight or obese, but a lot of families don't feel comfortable talking about it with their doctors, and doctors don't feel comfortable talking about weight with the children.

She went on to say, "This toolkit is giving doctors and families a resource, questions to ask and ways to start the conversation so doctors can help kids get on the right path to reducing obesity."
