Thousands sign La. petition to secede from the U.S.
BATON ROUGE - Louisiana became the first of 20 states to petition the Obama Administration to "peacefully grant the state to withdraw from the United States of America and create its own NEW government."
"Michael E" from Slidell created it and was the first to sign last Wednesday less than 24 hours after President Barack Obama was re-elected to his second term.
More than 13,000 people have signed the petition, and 25,000 are needed before Dec. 7 to get an "official" response from the White House.
Michigan, Arkansas, Tennessee, Missouri, South Carolina, North Carolina, Texas, Kentucky, Colorado, Alabama, Montana, North Dakota, Indiana, Mississippi, Florida, Georgia, New York, Oregon and New Jersey join the state in similar, yet not as popular attempts. Texas has the strongest following with 25,374 signatures in three days, enough to warrant an administrative response.
The Obama Administration created a section of WhiteHouse.gov called, "We the People" which allows citizens to have their voices heard by creating a petition.
