Thieves steal Marine's priceless memorabilia

PONCHATOULA - Thugs broke into a house in Ponchatoula and walked away with priceless military mementos that belonged to retired Marine Lt. Col. Jim Hulsey.

He and his wife were not home when the thieves struck. The suspects busted the front door and allowed themselves in, taking jewelry a television set, a gun collection, a marine sword and a set of dog tags.

"My sword is unique because I've had it since 1966 it has my name engraved on it," said Hulsey.

It's his official Marine Officer sword, and it's gone. Hulsey said the thieves also fired a shotgun before taking it, leaving behind two holes.

"Evidently they accidentally fired one of them twice," Hulsey said.

Perhaps the most troubling item stolen, Hulsey's dog tags from Vietnam.

"I was going to pass them on to my son at the appropriate time... So they have a lot of sentimental value."

Investigators said the suspects dropped items at the scene that linked someone to the crime. Police said they are investigating those leads.

Most of the stolen items can't be replaced; and Hulsey said he plans to install surveillance cameras in his home.
