Texas Brine starts issuing settlement checks
BAYOU CORNE - Settlement checks went to some people to escape the ever-growing sinkhole in Assumption Parish.
Texas Brine, the company believed responsible for the sinkhole, started handing out the checks yesterday.
So far, four buyout deals are complete. Once homeowners get the check they have 30 days to move out.
News 2 talked to one couple already packing up.
"It's different when you have to do something when you want to. We didn't elect to do this. If I had my choice, I'd stay right here," said Gerald Merritt.
So far 63 property owners have agreed to a buyout and could settle as soon as next week.
