ST. GABRIEL - Basketball fans remembered a fallen player Tuesday night.

Malcolm Calloway drowned on Mother's Day last year and during a basketball game at East Iberville High School, the community honored him by retiring his jersey.

"Basketball was everything, he liked to hoop," said Calloway's cousin and former teammate David Lewis. "He was always at the park hooping day in, day out."

The 17-year-old drowned swimming in a Geismar pond. His death rocked the community and the school.

Fellow basketball players, both men and women, wore warm-up jerseys with his number five and nickname, "Smoove."

"[We retired] his number so every kid can come back and remember who he was," said Coach Douglas Schultz. "He was such a great guy and good community leader."

East Iberville High School basketball players presented Calloway's family with his jersey. His framed jersey will be displayed proudly in the trophy case outside of the gym.
