Teachers walk neighborhood for students

BATON ROUGE- In true door-to-door fashion, teachers from Highland Elementary walked the streets of Gardere today reminding the community that school starts in two days.

The annual event brings teachers into their students' neighborhood so they can meet face-to-face before classes begin.

"Sometimes the community is separate from the school and we just wanted to show the community that we are part of the community," said Sabrina Jenkins, a teacher at the school. "The education system at Highland is part of the community and we should all work together to achieve success."

Many teachers got hugs from old students, who were quick to inform their younger peers about their old educators.

"I think the kids get more respect for the teachers knowing they come out and they know that the teachers care about them and I think that plays a big role in them going to school," said Quantia Walker, who has three children in the school.

This is the 11th year that Highland Elementary has held their "walk-about" in the Gardere neighborhood.
