Teacher registers as sex offender after getting plea deal
BATON ROUGE - A teacher took a plea deal that keeps her from going to jail, but requires she register as a sex offender following her arrest for having sex with a student earlier this school year.
According to a sex offender database, Ashley Dowden registered Friday. Court documents show plea agreement paperwork was also filed Friday, requiring she register as such. However, the deal keeps her from serving a 15-year prison sentence. Instead, the prison time was suspended and Dowden was put on five years supervised probation.
Dowden also received a deal for a second charge of prohibited sexual conduct between educator and student. Prison time was suspended and she received two years probation.
In addition, Dowden must not contact the victim or the victim's family, can not teach or volunteer around juveniles, and follow other court mandated requirements.
Dowden changed her appearance drastically since being arrested in August 2014. In her sex offender registration photograph, Dowden has darker hair and eyes.
Dowden was one of three teachers arrested this school year. In unrelated cases, Robert M. Lewis, 30, and Amber Anderson, 27, were arrested in the 2014-2015 school year.
