Teacher accused of sleeping with students posts bond
PLAQUEMINE - A teacher at the Math Science and Arts Academy West in Iberville Parish posted a $100,000 bond this afternoon, following his arrest on 37 counts of inappropriate behavior with students.
Keavin Keith allegedly met his victims in the ninth grade classroom where he taught Geography and Civics. Sheriff Brett Stassi said a recent graduate came forward last night. When investigators began looking into it, that's when they said additional victims came forward.
"We went in with one," Sheriff Stassi said. "In less than 12 hours, we had three. I'm leaving that door open that there may be other victims out there."
Stassi said the suspect was placed in solitary confinement after he began exhibiting suicidal tendencies.
At the school where Keith taught, Principal Elvis Cavalier was in shock.
"I almost passed out," Cavalier said.
Cavalier called Keith an extraordinary teacher. In 2013, he was awarded Parish Teacher of the Year.
"It's very upsetting to me that this was going on," Cavalier said. "Hopefully none of that was going on at this campus. But I'm not ruling anything out at this point."
Parents of students at the school were extremely concerned about the news and are planning to take swift action.
"If he's sleeping around with 15-year-olds, what makes him not want to go to younger children?" parent Brooke Lachney asked.
Keith has been placed on unpaid leave. The findings of this investigation will be turned over to the District Attorney's Office.
