Sylvia explains levee proposal

ST. AMANT- Next week, parish officials will discuss a proposed levee system that would protect the area from backwater flooding.

Work is moving forward on the extension of the Laurel Ridge Levee. The levee currently ends at Gold Place Road. Engineers have plans to extend it to Wall Cemetery Road.

Wednesday, February 11, the East Ascension Consolidated Gravity Drainage District No. 1 Board will hold a public meeting to discuss right-of-way acquisitions and a possible route.

The levee could be anywhere from eight to twelve feet high, similar to what is already in place south of St. Amant.

The project has been years in the making. In a 2013 interview with WBRZ, drainage officials said building the levee would provide significant protection from flooding from the Amite River near Port Vincent to Sorrento. It is expected that the levee would protect as much as seventy to eighty percent of properties that flooded in 1983.

The meeting is at the St. Amant Park Auditorium, 45404 Stringer Bridge Road at 6 p.m.
