Sunshine Bridge overhaul halfway done
DONALDSONVILLE - The Department of Transportation and Development says it's about halfway done overhauling the Sunshine Bridge, and the bridge should return to four-lanes by early next year.
The bridge connects both banks of Ascension Parish, and DOTD estimates that 22,000 vehicles use the bridge daily. Humidity and other elements have caused rust and corrosion issues for the bridge. Two years ago, it was deemed structurally deficient, but repairs should bring it up-to-code.
"Corrosion and there was rust, and it just needed repairs and painting. It's common maintenance," said Rodney Mallett of DOTD. "But at the same time it's something that really needed to be addressed so we can extend the life of the bridge."
Similar work is being done on bridges in Baton Rouge. The "Old Bridge" carrying US 190 is also getting an overhaul, and the "New Bridge" is receiving spot repairs and paint.
