Sun safety tips to keep kids safe for a lifetime
BATON ROUGE - A pair of skin savvy doctors joined News 2's Brittany Weiss on our 4 p.m. show today to talk about ways to keep your kids safe in the Louisiana sun as the outdoor months are now fully in swing.
Dr. Jessica LeBlanc, an expert on pediatric dermatology and parents in her own right, brought the message on sun protection for "little ones" and a word of caution about the risk of melanoma. She said it's important to start proper sun protection early because only five sunburns increases your risk for skin cancer and the earlier this overexposure occurs, the more dangerous it becomes. According to Dr. LeBlanc, it's never too early to start these good habits when approaching time in the sun as the safety steps will need to remain in place for a lifetime.
Firstly, kids and adults should both try to avoid the most intense ultraviolet rays of the day by trying to stay indoors between the hours of 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. If you can't completely avoid the sun, rock a broad spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Be sure to reapply the sunscreen every few hours or after swimming or sweating. On top of the applying the lotion, make sure to outfit babies and toddlers with sun protective clothing like wide-brimmed hats, long sleeve shirts and pants that cover as much sensitive skin as possible. Throw some shades on to complete the sun-ready look and protect eyes from the more intense, direct rays of the spring and summer sun.
